Middle-order batsman Eoin Morgan was a notable omission when England named their squad for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka in March and April.
The left-hander struggled for form in the recent clashes with Pakistan in the UAE, with his top score in all three forms of the game just 31.
This has cost Morgan his place in the Test squad, with Ravi Bopara and Samit Patel his likely replacements if England choose to continue with their favoured six batsmen line-up.
Kent off-spinner James Tredwell has also won a call-up, with England expecting conditions to favour spin bowling, having also included Graeme Swann, Monty Panesar and spinning all-rounder Patel.
The tour of Sri Lanka takes on added importance with the World Twenty20 taking place on the island in September and October, with England 9/2 with bookmaker to retain their title.
