Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Real Madrid)
Recently, the Portuguese is experiencing ones of his best moments in his current career. He has been scoring goals in series for Real Madrid team and is one of the main candidates to win the title of the best scorer in the Spanish Primera Division. If he is also the most effective at EURO, he will be the best football player of 2012.
Zlatan Ibrahimović (Sweden, AC Milan)
He is told to be past his best years, but Zlatan wants to surprise everybody during EURO. Although his Sweden team is not mentioned as the main candidate to win the title of Europe’s champion, by a happy coincidence, Ibrahimović can become the top scorer. In Italian league he has been recently showing an excellent effectiveness …..
Karim Benzema (France, Real Madrid)
Another Real Madrid footballer in our rating and another serious candidate for the title of the best scorer. Within the “Royal” team Benzema is not as brilliant as Ronaldo, but nevertheless, nobody can deny that he is effective. At EURO, the French team will play for him. And if you have Franck Ribera in the team, you can count on great passes.
Fernando Torres (Spain, Chelsea)
He is not on a winning streak lately, but Chelsea does not as well as their supporters would expect. However, everybody in Spain is convinced that Torres will return to good shape and will be extremely effective at European Championships. The Spaniards will surely need his shape from EURO 2008, since their team will probably lack the best scorer – David Villa.
Lucas Podolski (Germany, FC Koeln)
Although this footballer, who was born in the Polish city of Zabrze, plays ordinarily for the average German club FC Koeln, in the national team he is always the most important player. This time it surely won’t change, either. Podolski is approaching the age of 27 and wants to win an important trophy; European championship would be hitting the bull’s-eye. To this success he may even add the top scorer’s crown.
Mario Gomez (Germany, Bayern München)
In the Bundesliga he has been scoring goal after goal; after the last series of matches he had already 18 on his account and there is no indication that he is going to slow down. This Bayern München player will surely be one of the greatest stars in the German national team. And if he shows his skills well (i.e. becomes the top scorer), after EURO all West European clubs will knock themselves out over him.
Robin van Persie (Holland, Arsenal)
When Arsenal London scores a goal, everybody thinks that its author is van Persie. And they are mostly right, since the Dutch has been in a smashing shape lately. At EURO his group rivals will surely concentrate themselves on eliminating him from the game. But a lot of footballers have already tried it and only few of them managed to do it.
Robert Lewandowski (Poland, Borussia Dortmund)
Lewandowski demonstrates in this Bundesliga season that he can score goals in series. Moreover, European Championships are a special tournament; to become the top scorer it sometimes is sufficient to score four goals. If the Pole scores for example a hat-trick in one match, he may be very close to getting this title. The dreams come true!
Mario Balotelli (Italy, Manchester City)
Crazy, non-predictable, but at the same time smashingly effective. Wojtek Szczęsny, who was defeated by Balotelli in a friendly match (Italians won against Poland by scoring 2:0 then) could convince himself of his workmanship last November. If Balotelli treats EURO seriously and does his best, he can be a revelation.
Andriy Shevchenko (Ukraine, Dynamo Kiev)
He is already ageing and EURO 2012 will surely be his last major tournament. This is why he will be doubly mobilized to achieve something more. It is rather unlikely that his Ukrainian team will be European champion, but knowing the effectiveness of Shevchenko, you can expect him to fight for the top scorer’s title. That would be a wonderful crowning achievement of his great career.
