Arsenal striker Robin van Persie says he is not ready to open discussions on a new contract extension.
The 28-year-old insists he is happy with his current deal, which has just over 18 months left to run, but his decision has led to speculation over where he sees his future. Van Persie has seen former team-mates Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri sold over the last few months while the Gunners, who are 11/1 with bookmaker to defeat Spurs 2-1 next Sunday, have made a poor start to the season.
The Dutchman scored his 100th goal for Arsenal in the weekend’s 3-0 win over Bolton and manager Arsene Wenger will be desperate to tie his captain down to a long-term deal.
However, Van Persie believes the time is not right to start discussing any new deal.
He said: “It’s not only about me, it’s about the team. We are not talking now because we are so busy – we have games every three or four days. I don’t think it’s clever to do that during the season.”
