Arsenal have responded to Robin van Persie’s announcement that he will not be extending his stay at the club by saying they expect him to ‘fulfil his commitments’.
The 28-year-old, who is 7/1 with bookmaker to be the Premier League’s leading goalscorer next season, has one year left on his deal and says he will not be signing a new contract, citing a desire to win silverware as his primary reason to move on.
The Holland international is reported to be interesting Premier League champions Manchester City, as well as the likes of Juventus and Paris St Germain, but it appears Arsenal do not intend to allow him to leave the club just yet.
“We have to respect Robin’s decision not to renew his contract,” the club said in a statement.
“Robin has one year to run on his current contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the club.”
