Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard have not been included in Fabio Capello’s squad for England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.
England are 5/2 with bookmaker to get the point they need on Friday to qualify for the finals in Poland and Ukraine next summer and head coach Capello believes they can achieve this without two of their most experienced players. Gary Cahill and Phil Jones are included, leaving no place for Ferdinand, while Gerrard is continuing his recovery from a groin injury.
Kyle Walker, Bobby Zamora and Scott Carson have been called up, while Jermain Defoe and Joleon Lescott have been omitted.
Capello insists his team will go for all three points in Podgorica.
“If you play for a draw it is a big mistake, you are defending a result and it is easy then to make silly or stupid mistakes,” he told FATV.
“We need to go to win in Montenegro and not to play for a draw.”
