Ferrari principal Stefano Domenicali wants his team to focus on trying to help Fernando Alonso overtake McLaren’s Jenson Button in the drivers’ standings.
With just two races of the 2011 Formula 1 season left, Alonso trails Button by 13 points and the Spaniard is 5/1 with bookmaker to end up second behind runaway leader and world champion Sebastian Vettel.
Domenicali said: “In the remaining two races we want to try and get on the podium and try all we can to get Fernando to second place in the drivers’ classification.”
Alonso, who has won just once this season, is 9/2 to be world champion again in 2012, with Domenicali warning that Ferrari must be in the title hunt 12 months from now.
“Everyone at Maranello is working to produce a car that is competitive right from the start of next season, when, as we are well aware, we can have only one goal – which is victory,” he added.
