McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh insists Lewis Hamilton will not allow the team’s current disappointing form to influence whether he stays or goes.
Hamilton, who is 9/2 with bookmaker to win this year’s drivers’ championship, finished eighth at the British Grand Prix with his car seeming to struggle for pace.
The 27-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is now 37 points adrift of first-placed Fernando Alonso and has been linked with a move to rival team Mercedes.
However, Whitmarsh believes better times are just around the corner for the beleaguered Formula 1 outfit.
“He (Hamilton) knows that (the team will improve), I know that and we’re disciplined and battle-hardened enough these days to know that,” he said.
“You’ve got to take stock, learn from these weekends. Sometimes you can learn more from these than the successful ones.”
