Phil Mickelson believes he has finally found his best form after returning a third round 63 at the Deutsche Bank Championship – and the 41-year-old insists he can get even better.
Mickelson, who is 40/1 with bookmaker to win the tournament, made a late bid for glory in Boston on Sunday, firing an eight-under-par round which included six birdies and an eagle to finish four shots adrift of leader Bubba Watson going into the final day.
Much has been made over the last week of the left-hander’s decision to switch to a belly putter to improve his recent inconsistent performances on the greens, but he relied on his irons during his third round to prove that he remains one of the best players around.
“It was a really good ball-striking round,” Mickelson said. “I hit it well and hit a lot of iron shots close and had a lot of opportunities.
“But since the British (Open), starting at the British, I’ve been hitting the ball really well.
“The first two days here I did not obviously, but that was more due to the fact that I didn’t hit any shots for four days because I spent all my time trying to putt, trying to get the putter down.”
