Open champion Ernie Els is eager to challenge for further glory at this week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone.
The South African, 50/1 with bookmaker to win the tournament, believes that his new-found confidence will stand him in good stead for the rest of the season and he is eager to try and improve on a best of fifth place at Firestone back in 1999.
He said: “At 7,400 yards the South Course here is a pretty tough par 70.
“I like the layout, so it’s hard to explain why I haven’t got a better record in this tournament, but I’ve shot plenty of good numbers around here and I feel like I can play well.”
Tiger Woods has won the title in Akron on seven occasions, while defending champion Adam Scott will no doubt be desperate to erase his Royal Lytham misery by retaining his title in Ohio.
