Rory McIlroy is in top form just over a month before the start of the US Masters after holding off Tiger Woods’ late charge to win the Honda Classic.
The 22-year-old’s victory in Florida was enough for him to usurp Luke Donald as the world’s number one golfer.
However, McIlroy, 9/2 with bookmaker to win the US Masters, was pushed hard by Woods who, after starting the day nine behind the leader, fired an eight-under par 62, one off the course record, to finish joint second.
McIlroy said of Woods, 5/1 to win the US Masters: “It was tough, especially seeing Tiger make a charge.
“I knew par golf would probably be good enough and that’s what I was trying to do, so to shoot one-under is very nice and I was able to get the job done.”
