Golf – Mickelson in need of a rest

Phil Mickelson is to spend the next couple of weeks attempting to recharge his batteries ahead of the US Open.

Mickelson, who is 14/1 with bookmaker to win the US Open this year, pulled out of this week’s Memorial Tournament on Thursday due to “fatigue” after recording a seven-over-par 77 in the first round.
The left-hander has played a lot of competitive golf in the last few weeks and now says he must take some time off to ensure he is ready for the start of the season’s second Major in two weeks.
He told the PGA Tour’s website: “I think I probably just went a little bit overboard last month, and it has nothing to do with playing poorly and so forth, but I do think I need to get rested to play my best for the Open.
“I have to look at what’s best for me to play in the US Open, and I’m going to take the next few days to kind of rest up.”
