Phil Mickelson is considering using a belly putter, despite being one of the game’s top performers on the green.
The American has struggled at crucial times in the last couple of years and has been practising with a longer putter ahead of the Deutsche Bank Championship, which Mickelson is 30/1 with bookmaker to win.
Mickelson says he has been considering making the change since talking to new US PGA champion Keegan Bradley, who used the longer stick to great effect to land a shock first Major title.
“It’s awkward to me,” he said after his pro-am round at TPC Boston. “But so many guys have had success with it that I thought I’d give it a try.”
Bradley is 70/1 to win the Deutsche Bank Championship, while world number one Luke Donald is 12/1.
