Golf – Westwood excited by Open challenge

Lee Westwood says he is still trying to figure out where the birdies are at Royal Lytham but is looking forward to the challenges the course will present at the Open.

Westwood is 14/1 with bookmaker to win his first Major this weekend at the 58th attempt having come so close in the past, finishing runner-up in 2010.
The English competitor has a decent record at Open Championships and says Lytham is his favourite course on the rota.
However, the 39-year-old is quick to point out the challenges of the Lancashire course and expects a combination of the rough and the weather to make this year’s Open very challenging.
“It’s going to be a tough test, as Lytham is. They changed a par-five (the sixth) to a par-four, so relative to under par you would think is going to be a bit higher,” said Westwood.
“Obviously it’s in England and it’s nice to play on home turf, that makes it more special. And I think it’s a fair golf course that’s a lot harder than it looks at first impression.
“I was going around yesterday (Monday) trying to figure out where the birdie opportunities are, and I’m still trying to figure that out.”
