Capital of Wielkopolska Region and Wielkopolskie Voivodship, fifth largest city in Poland in terms of population (550 000 citizens) with over 1000-year tradition, with history dating back to the beginnings of the Polish state. In the cathedral situated in Ostrów Tumski first sovereigns of Poland are buried: Mieszko I and Bolesław Chrobry.
Poznań is famous for fair – Poznań International Fair was organised for the first time in 1921. The city is one of the largest economic centres in Poland. It is also regarded as one of the most attractive investment destinations in Poland. Moreover Poznań is a major academic centre – over 140 000 persons study at 25 higher education facilities in Poznań.
Poznań attracts tourists with its numerous historic sites (such as Renaissance city hall in Old Town with famous goats, Imperial Castle) and cultural events such as International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition, which has been organised for half a century, and theatre Malta Festival Poznań which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011.
