Winger Tom Briscoe believes England are capable of finding the extra gear they need if they are to defeat Australia in Saturday’s Four Nations final.
England, who are 7/2 with bookmaker to win the final, lost to the Kangaroos in the group stage in a tight game and Briscoe believes they can find that next level of performance needed to beat the formidable Australians at Elland Road.
“As a team, we’re performing pretty well and I think we can take a lot of confidence out of that performance at the weekend [the 28-6 victory against New Zealand],” he said.
“Hopefully we take it into this week and get a win. We know we’ve still got to improve a lot to win this game but we think we’re capable of doing that with the squad we’ve got.
“In big games you need to step up and in finals you need to go to that special place where maybe you haven’t been before. We’ve been improving steadily and that’s been the main aim.”
Coach Steve McNamara has not yet finalised his starting line-up for Saturday, with second rower Gareth Ellis included in his squad after recovering from a back injury.
