Owen Coyle hopes to bring USA international Tim Ream to Bolton Wanderers as a replacement for Gary Cahill who has moved to Chelsea in a £7million deal.
The transfer of the New York Red Bulls defender is expected to be sealed in the next few days.
Coyle’s team, who remain in the Premier League’s bottom three after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester United, are currently 8/15 with bookmaker to be relegated this season.
Coyle admits: “Gary was a terrific player for Bolton. There’s no getting away from it, there’s never an easy time to lose a player of that quality. But we do have good players at this club.
“Dedryck Boyata is there and, if we’re able to secure the services of Ream, that will bolster our defence too.”
Bolton play Macclesfield Town at home in an FA Cup third round replay on Tuesday night and are 7/1 to beat the League Two side 3-0.
