Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard is set to return to action after a six-month injury lay-off when the Reds face Brighton in the third round of the Carling Cup, a competition Kenny Dalglish’s side are 13/2 with bookmaker to win this season.
Dalglish picked a near full-strength team for the second round victory at Exeter City and will do the same against the Seagulls as Liverpool attempt to bounce back following recent Premier League defeats at Stoke City and Tottenham.
“We are pleased to be in the Carling Cup and our intention is to stay in it for as long as we possibly can,” said Dalglish, who is only too aware that last season an under-strength Liverpool side slumped to an embarrassing defeat to League Two strugglers Northampton Town in the competition.
Gerrard is 11/2 to open the scoring against Brighton.
