Midfielder Darren Fletcher has admitted that home draws with Benfica and FC Basel have left Manchester United facing a possible Champions League exit.
The Red Devils face Basel on Wednesday evening needing a draw to book a place in the last 16, with United 1/8 with bookmaker to progress to the knockout stages.
“We look to those two home draws with Basel and Benfica as the reason why we’re not where we’d like to be, but we can’t do anything about that now,” Fletcher said.
“We can only deal with what’s in front of us in the position we’re in and challenge that obstacle.”
United will be without strike pair Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez (both ankle) for the crucial clash at St Jakob Park, with Michael Carrick missing through suspension.
Michael Owen, Tom Cleverley, Rafael and Fabio also miss the trip to Switzerland, with Sir Alex Ferguson likely to pair Wayne Rooney with the fit-again Danny Welbeck in attack.
