Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini believes that Manchester United’s signing of Robin van Persie makes them the favourites to win the Premier League this campaign.
The Citizens, 5/4 with bookmaker to retain their title, edged out United on goal difference last season, but Mancini has backed the Red Devils to hit back strongly, especially after adding former Arsenal man Van Persie to their ranks.
“Any team that bought Van Persie would be better and I was serious last week when I said Manchester United were the favourites,” Mancini told reporters.
“They have been playing for the title every year for 20 years. We can’t change this situation in one year.”
Meanwhile, Mancini has also confirmed that versatile defender Micah Richards could be absent for a month, with the Citizens opening their league campaign at home to newly-promoted Southampton on Sunday.
