Great Britain coach Stuart Pearce says Daniel Sturridge could be replaced in the Olympic football squad if he fails to prove his fitness this week.
Team GB start their Olympic campaign against Senegal on 26th July and are 8/15 with bookmaker to win their first match of the tournament.
Sturridge was expected to start in the game before he was diagnosed with viral meningitis.
The Chelsea striker is now over the illness but doesn’t have much time to get back to full fitness before Britain’s campaign gets underway.
Although his club have passed him fit, Pearce says he wants to give his own medical staff the chance to assess Sturridge before deciding whether he can play or not.
“I have got to be 100 per cent sure in my mind that Daniel is fit enough and can see out a tournament,” Pearce said.
“There were certainly doubts because of the illness he had.”
