England’s star striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he has only himself to blame for a three-match suspension which could blight his Euro 2012 campaign.
Rooney could miss all three group games unless an appeal succeeds in having the ban reduced, with England 10/1 with bookmaker to be crowned European champions for the first time.
The Manchester United ace was handed the punishment for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during the 2-2 draw in Montenegro which sealed England’s passage to the finals.
A repentant Rooney said: “Obviously it’s devastating for me, but it’s something that’s my own fault, so I can’t really complain.
“It was stupid by me – I regretted it as soon as I did it. It’s no excuse, but I still feel the punishment is a bit harsh.”
With England likely to be hampered by the absence of Rooney for several games, reigning champions Spain are 5/2 to retain their title next year, with Germany 7/2.
