Defending champion Novak Djokovic will play David Ferrer in the semi-finals of the US Open after securing a hard-fought victory against Juan Martin del Potro.
The 25-year-old beat the 2009 US Open champion 6-2 7-6 6-4 in a hard-fought quarter-final, with the second set being particularly tight.
After securing victory in three hours and six minutes, Djokovic, 4/9 with bookmaker to win the US Open, admitted: “I was lucky in the second set to come out with a two-set lead. Even though it was a straight-sets win, it was closer than the score indicated.”
In the other quarter-final, Ferrer, 28/1 to win the US Open, fought back from 4-1 down in the fifth set to clinch a thrilling victory over Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic.
