Andy Murray’s Grand Slam victory at the US Open earned the approval of the man he beat in an epic final, Novak Djokovic.
Murray, who is 5/4 with bookmaker to win one Grand Slam title in 2013, eventually outlasted the defending champion 7-6 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 in a match which lasted almost five hours at Flushing Meadows.
Afterwards, Djokovic praised his friend Murray, who had been beaten in each of his previous four Grand Slam finals.
“He deserved to win this Grand Slam more than anybody, I’m sure, because over the years he’s been a top player,” Djokovic said.
“He’s played so consistently well and won against the top players many times on many surfaces. He has proven that he’s a champion and he deserves to be where he is, no question about it.”
Murray is 11/4 to add the Australian Open title to his name in January next year, with Djokovic 11/8 to defend his title in Melbourne.
