Four-time champion John McEnroe believes that Andy Murray, 9/2 with bookmaker, has his ‘best shot’ of winning a Grand Slam title at the US Open.
Murray’s hopes of glory at Flushing Meadows look to have been boosted by recent fitness problems for both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, and McEnroe thinks that the time might be right for the Scotsman.
He said: “The hungriest man in the draw should be Murray. I think this is his best shot to win one.”
Murray is 7/2 to reach the final, having previously lost in three Grand Slam finals without winning a set, including a 2008 US Open final defeat to Roger Federer.
Nadal, who is 4/1 to defend the title he won 12 months ago, is confident he can shrug off recent foot problems to challenge for an 11th Grand Slam crown.
He told reporters: “If I am playing well and I’m healthy, experience tells me I am competitive with everybody.”
