Serena Williams will turn her attention to Wimbledon after suffering a first-round exit at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career at the French Open.
The 13-time Grand Slam winner was beaten by home favourite and world number 111 Virginie Razzano at Roland Garros.
The French woman edged a fascinating encounter 4-6 7-6 6-3, which means the draw has opened up for the likes of Victoria Azarenka, now 11/4 with bookmaker to win the French Open, and Maria Sharapova, 9/4.
“It’s disappointing, but it’s life,” said Williams afterwards. “Things could be a lot worse. I haven’t had the easiest past six months. It’s nothing I can’t deal with.
“I’ve just got to go back and just figure out what I did wrong and not do it again, learn from it. I think that’s the best thing I can do.”
