World number one Caroline Wozniacki’s bid for a first Grand Slam title faces a massive hurdle when she takes on Serena Williams in the US Open semi-finals.
Wozniacki, 13/2 with bookmaker to win the title at Flushing Meadows, moved into the last four with a 6-1 7-6 victory over Andrea Petkovic, while Williams shrugged off a slow start to beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5 6-1.
Williams (4/11) is aiming for a fourth US Open title, but expects to be tested to the full by Wozniacki, saying: “Her (main) weapon is the fact that she never gives up. That’s probably the biggest weapon I think you can have in all of tennis.
“Also, she’s moving really fast, she’s running every ball down. That’s a great weapon to have as well.”
In the other half of the draw, Australia’s Samantha Stosur will take on surprise package Angelique Kerber of Germany, who reached her first Grand Slam semi-final with a three-set win over Flavia Pennetta.
